i haven't made any real resolutions this year. mostly, i want to take things a little slower. breathe a bit deeper... this gorgeous sunset called us off of the freeway on our way back from santa barbara the other day to do just that.

i hope you are enjoying this new year. we are so thankful for the amazing support that we have had over the past 3 years of everything gardens. we will be implementing some big changes in 2011 and hope that you'll continue to follow us on our journey.

i hope that december is treating you well! having just returned from a restful retreat in mexico (photos to come) i am feeling ready to tackle the world (or at least the holiday season :)

it's been a while since i shared some current work. we really have to get back and take photos of all of the great projects we have been working on lately. for now, i'll share conzuelo and mike's garden in silver lake.

m & c bought a house a few years ago from the builder who obviously ran out of funds to finish the landscape on the project. they came to us to shape up and customize their little space and make it kid friendly for their son. so far we have tiled the hardscape, built out a custom day bed/bench which we have tiled with the most beautiful tile that we designed and got for them at a scream of a deal! we just finished the pergola and we'll be planting up the garden and adding synthetic grass for a play area. i'll take more overall photos when we have everything complete.

this is mid-pergola building - the finished pergola is stunning and just needs to get sealed. it's amazing how much larger their space feels now.

i took photos of all of these plants waiting patiently in our holding zone to go into their new home this week. i feel that having a tight color palette is so important to a garden. it's really what ties the design together. this one is such a lovely mix of colors and textures with the silver artemesia, dudleya and salvia to the pink echeveria, heuchera, thyme and sedum.

recent photos of a garden install from march '09...

linda wanted a wild feeling garden and she loves color. i was inspired by the gorgeous newly built house. we used sculptural agave attenuata, agave vilmoriana and those gorgeous olive trees (which look like they've been there forever!) to create structure within the space. the wildness comes from the lavenders, sages and groundcover geraniums. i love the final effect after the plants have filled in. it feels like you are on a santa barbara estate - not a small lot in manhattan beach.

i'll try to get photos of the back soon which includes a built in jacuzzi, beautiful fountain, built in bbq zone, and a covetable fire pit.

wow, july just flew right by didn't it? it's been quiet here on the ol' blog, but not in the garden. things are getting hot and for our heat loving plant species, now is the time for them to shine! the garden looks so good right now, so we wanted to introduce you to one of our new favorite plant varieties

Euphorbia x martinii 'Ascot Rainbow' (spurge) is a stunning perennial with clusters of variegated foliage and flowers. the narrow leaves are grey-green with a striking yellow edge which become flushed with shades of red, pink, and orange in the cooler months, while the showy tubular flowers are cream, lime, and green with a ruby-red center in spring. compact, forming a neat mound 20” high and wide, Euphorbia x martinii 'Ascot Rainbow' is ideal for containers as well as the front or middle of the border. highly heat and drought tolerant, plants are best suited to full sun, well drained soils and moderate water. hardy to 0F.

Euphorbia x martinii 'Ascot Rainbow' is available this week in 4” pots, 1 and 5 gallon containers.

the foggy june gloom is just burning off here at the shop. everyone complains about it, but i say keep it coming because i know what happens after: sweltering heat! (the flowers and plants cringe as i write this you know...) besides my sanity, the gloom is also good for photo taking. there is an extraordinary light peaking through those clouds.

how excited was i when i got a call from two of my favorite clients telling me that they had purchased a vineyard in paso robles! i'm just thrilled for them, and even more thrilled to help them shape the outdoors into their dream space for their family and friends. the big hole being dug is for the pool. we are also adding an outdoor kitchen, play court, potager garden, and lounging areas.

venteux vineyards is about 10 acres of productive vines and 3 structures which house the wine making operations, the tasting room, the living quarters, and an active bed and breakfast. if you find yourself looking for an escape from san francisco or la (they are smack in the middle) i would highly recommend calling them. the site is gorgeous and their wines are truly top notch. and while you're at it, don't leave paso without eating at artisan! it was beyond...

a front garden favorite

yesterday i revisited two gardens that i designed a while ago. it's so important to do this as a designer. you can learn so much about how the garden maintains over time and how your tastes change. i was thrilled that i am even more in love with these gardens than i was a year ago.

the photos above are the front yard of one of my very first projects out on my own - about 3 years ago and i couldn't be happier with how it has taken shape. i'm working again with this couple on a very very exciting new venture for them in paso robles. i'm heading there this weekend to do a site tour and some very important research!

spring bounty is on at the shop. our 15 gallon fruit trees are filled with fruit! we have pomegranite flowering, plums ripening, figs galore, and persimmons which i am especially excited about. our vegetable boxes are turning over a nice harvest as well. my broccoli is beautiful and it is looking like a great heirloom tomato season. we still have a great selection of vegetable starts including some amazing french melons and squash which are perfect to put in the ground now. see you soon!

through the ups and downs of having your own business, it's really great work to get to share the process with your sister.

i started everything gardens 3 years ago this may. it wasn't long before i talked steph into moving from pittsburgh to help me on this adventure. we've learned so much, grown so much. sorry for the sappy post, but i'm feeling very appreciative of her today... especially so when everyone coming into the shop is oohing and ahhing over her gorgeous floral arrangements. so, thank you stephanie for being my creative and kick-ass partner.

one of the things we miss most about our native pennsylvania landscape are the amazing fall color shows. here in la, we have very few hints of autumn, but this here plant is one of them. say hello to hydrangea quercifolia 'snow queen' aka "oak-leaf hydrangea" she's a nice little taste of home even if her fall color coincides with the spring blooms!

"This is a beautiful deciduous shrub with deeply lobed, oak leaf-shaped, dark green leaves which provide spectacular fall foliage in colors ranging from orange to crimson and scarlet. Performs best in dappled shade, full sun if adequate moisture is provided with a well drained, acidic soil, and is very cold hardy. We have our plant growing in the shade with occasional irrigation. Typically found as a multi-stemmed shrub growing to 8 ft. tall and 12 ft. or more wide. Prune as needed immediately after flowering (June-July) as new flowers are set on previous years growth."

excuse the lack of posts friends. it's been raining cats and dogs here and we just don't know how to survive in these conditions. the roads are wet, we need to use those umbrella things and the la river even has water running through it, real live water people!

all kidding aside, the plants are the happiest we've seen them in a long time (and we're really glad to get all of this rain too). for example, take a look at our little friend the pink lemonade tree. isn't he about the most gorgeous citrus you've seen?! the variegated leaves, the pink flower buds opening to sweet white flowers, the striped fruit and pink flesh. too much. love this one. we have them in stock here at the shop. swim on over to get one of your own :)

the rain also brings up the topic of rainwater harvesting. this is a big topic that i'm really excited to talk about. i'm going to save that post for later this week. it will be worth it!

friday afternoon going through the photo archives from before the holidays. i have a lot of work that i have to get back to and photograph!

including this project which we finished right before the holidays and they just got their outdoor pizza oven installed (jealous!). rae looks so regal in all of these photos, especially in the zen rock garden. i loved working with her because she's a great boss and straight to the point... rae; "i want grass for soccer and dirt to lay in, and a straight path to the door for when the mailman comes!"

it's complicated

we went to see the new meryl streep, alec baldwin, steve martin movie "it's complicated" this week. the movie was a tad slow at first, but we ended up really loving it.

my jaw dropped when they showed the scenes of meryl's santa barbara house and especially her french potager garden. i was ready to pack my bags and move in. the potager looked like a near impossible feat in vegetable gardening (those tomatoes, those cabbages!), so i was a little relieved to read that the tomatoes were actually wired onto the vines and the greens were hothouse grown . so don't feel bad if your vegetable garden is not as impeccable as meryl's yet, it sure is inspiring none the less!

back from a lovely few weeks in buenos aires. we had a great time with tomas' family and playing tourist. with a climate similar to la, bs as has a lot of beautiful outdoor spaces that i loved exploring and a similar plant pallete. i'm excited to be back full of inspiration and look forward to the great projects i get to work on this coming year.

one month ago, legendary landscape artist jeanne-claude passed away at 74 years old. working alongside her husband, christo, the pair are known for famously wrapping the reichstag in berlin and the pont neuf in paris in fabric.

remembering tonight as i find myself fully engaged in their archives. they were a dynamic pair inspiring me endlessly in their determination to bring such colossol vision to life.

it's cold in la! there is snow on the mountains and it finally feels like a season is coming in. of course, i just got back from pennsylvania and there is no real comparison (but it's cold here...really!!)

we've had such a great response to our terrariums that we have decided to have a terrarium building class here at the shop in january. stay posted for details. until then, you can place an order for local pickup or delivery. they make great living breathing gifts! we are also taking preorders for holiday centerpieces and bouquets for pickup and delivery.

there were lovely persimmons trees on the property that i walked yesterday for a new project.

the project is a beautiful mid-century residence designed by cliff may (the father of the ranch house) on a quarter acre overlooking the southbay. the hillsides are covered by fruit trees and dripping with possibility. i'm looking forward to doing a major clean-up in the landscape...using plants that highlight the original intent of the structure and it's beautifully designed indoor-outdoor relationship. right now it's overgrown and lacking identity. it's going to be a really fun process, so i'll post project photos as we progress.

lawrence halprin, fasla, known for his prominent works such as: freeway park in seattle, sea ranch california, lovejoy plaza (pictured above) in portland oregon, and ghirardelli square in san francisco; passed away this week at the age of 93.

halprin's work played a major role in my education at landscape architecture school. i studied his modernist theories, his skillful drawings, and his amazing built spaces.

he leaves us a legacy in his built environments that give our buildings a stronger foundation and make our walks more lively and interesting.

in some cities, halprin's work has fallen victim to neglect. the semi-permanent and ever-changing nature of landscapes make them more vulnerable than buildings. deferred maintenance and neglect can scar key components of a landscape's design. unfortunately, a number of significant landscapes have been lost during this century to demolition or have been completely altered.

take time to learn about cultural landscapes and see how you can become a land steward at the cultural landscape foundation.

the weather in la has me feeling a little crazy. it was cold and rainy, then it was 94 and humid last week. today it's milder in the 80s. i've been working on a few garden designs that i'm excited to share with you as they go in the ground as well as some class ideas through the end of the year.

also, we just got word that we'll be at the december unique los angeles market (5th & 6th). this will be our fourth event with them and we have the best time always. can't wait!

we hosted a sweet little community potluck at the shop last night and over 40 of our neighbors showed up to meet each other and mingle. we laughed alot and drank too much wine...it was so great! there were also two dogs that had so much fun running around the garden.

our very dear friends, chris and cammie, got married at greystone mansion this weekend - they looked absolutely amazing, didn't they?!? we were given the honor of arranging their florals. i have to say that my favorite moments were pinning the groom's boutonniere on (i was totally crying), cammie's vows (let's do this!), and chris' father's silly "toast to the french and the melba"... ha ha!

the bride and groom wanted arrangements that would last for time to come, so we opted for planted centerpieces of phormium, coleus, heuchera, helichrysum, dusty miller, and succulents. we also planted individual succulents in white ceramic with black glass topping as a take home. the bridal bouquets included agonis flexuousa 'after dark', fiddle head fern, calla lillies, echeveria nodulosa, chocolate cosmos and dusty miller.

they are off on their honeymoon now through the beautiful wine country... congratulations you guys, we love you!!

i think that my post this weekend calling in autumn worked! it is all about fall now and the air is cool and crisp, even chilly at night. we have added a beautiful selection of heirloom pumpkins grown on a local family farm to the shop (hand picked by yours truly). i'm in love with all the bumps and warts and colors. the white and the squatty cinderellas are my favorites. while i was selecting our stash, my farm helper kept laughing because i would say "ooh, that one is weird... i'll take it!"

look what i did this weekend! i got our new woolly garden pockets up and planted them. i used a blue-green and purple color pallette for our planted wall, but there is so much opportunity in the planting design of them. i can't wait to see the wall fill out over time.

edible los angeles did such a nice write up of us in their latest issue!

we talk about our design of front yard vegetable gardens which is something that we did quite a few of this season. we have always talked to our clients about incorporating edibles into a portion of the garden which i find to be essential, and to use fruit trees whenever and wherever possible. thanks to those who have allowed us to help them break the mold in such an exciting way!

i just installed this beautiful piece at a garden that we worked on last month in hermosa beach. the metal hanging was fabricated in italy to my specs and it is just perfect. we were so thrilled at how it really brings the space together. the photos do not do it justice as the ocean is just passed the planted aloe tree and the wall hanging picks up the beautiful blue. i'm looking for the perfect simple modern bench to place under the piece and i think this space will be complete.

a lovely saturday at the getty center with mom... so many beautiful layers and amazing plant combinations to inspire. i really loved the massing of black mondo grass with a clump of variegated grass (liriope?) within. it was especially striking. the day was soo great but left us with one major question:
do you think that they prune the floating labyrinth from a mini kayak or wearing waders?

edible gardens

here are some shots of our lovely edible gardens that we maintain weekly. our heirloom tomatoes are going off! i think that our all around favorite tomato variety that we planted this season is the cherokee purple, although i'm a big fan of the green zebra too. everyone got a hefty bag of veggies this week and we walked away with some good loot ourselves. i'm off to make a caprese salad and get ready for a big day tomorrow (mama gardens comes into town)!!

bring your kitty to work day was a smashing success a few weeks ago when steph brought eben. he was such a curious little kitty wandering around the shop. eben loves to eat the plants which i found cute until i realized that he could quickly chew through our inventory... does your cat eat your plants?

hello and welcome to our new little blog!

i'm vanessa, the garden side of everything gardens. my sister, stephanie, is the floral side (although the lines are very blurry as we are each other's assistant and right hand man).

we have a nursery and floral shop in los angeles and work on design and installations big and small throughout the region. our shop has a focus on sustainable and beautiful hand made products, drought tolerant plants (think succulents and mediterranean species) and gorgeous florals for events and just because... we're excited to share our day to day with you here and get to know you as well.
